A Country Doctor and The Bucket Rider by Franz Kafka

Season 2: Episode 2
Today we read two short stories by Franz Kafka
Franz Kafka was a german-speaking Ashkenazi Jew from Prague. He lived from 1883 to 1924. He was only 40 when he died. His most famous novella, “The Metamorphosis,” is about a protagonist named Gregor Samsa, who wakes up one morning and discovers he’s been transformed into a large cockroach of some sort. You may have heard the term “kafkaesque,” which is used to describe stories that employ similar magical realism techniques that Kafka used. I’m a big fan of his, so I wanted to read a couple of his shorter lesser known works.
The first story we’re reading today is called, “A Country Doctor,” and the second is called “The Bucket Rider.”

Bonus Episode, Movie Breakdown 1: El Camino and Yesterday
Film and TV are basically our preferred modern-day forms of storytelling. So I plan on doing more episodes like this one intermittently. I'm hoping to watch all the Oscar nominations (at least for Best Picture). You should see an episode with my Academy Award predictions some time in early to mid-February of next year.

The Cop and the Anthem by O. Henry

Monday Nov 11, 2019
Season 1: Episode 10
O. Henry was the pen name used for William Sydney Porter. He was an American short story writer who lived from 1862 to 1910. He’s noted for his surprise and twist endings. You may come across the term from time to time, an “O. Henry ending.” That’s what that means. That there was some twist or surprise at the end. The one we’re reading today is called "The Cop and the Anthem."

Bad News and The Funnel Horn by Deborah Ghedini
Monday Nov 04, 2019
Monday Nov 04, 2019
Season 1: Episode 9
So I’m reading two short stories today, because they’re flash fiction pieces, which means they’re extra short. I think both of these are under a thousand words each, though I didn’t do a word count. The first story I’m reading is called “Bad News” and the second is called “The Funnel Horn.” And both of these are in Deborah Ghedini's collection Twilight Tales, which is available on Amazon, along with her other books.

The Raven and The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe
Tuesday Oct 29, 2019
Tuesday Oct 29, 2019
Season 1: Episode 8
Happy Halloween!
Poe is more famous for his poetry than his prose, but today we’re reading, arguably his most famous work, “The Raven,” as well as “The Black Cat.” Now the latter is a short story, but “The Raven” is actually a poem. I chose to read it on the show because it’s a narrative poem, and so even though it rhymes, it does tell a story.
A lot of his work is considered scary, or at least creepy. And these two are no exception. So there’s your disclaimer, if you’re not up for scary today (though it is Halloween this week, so why wouldn't you be?).

The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde
Tuesday Oct 22, 2019
Tuesday Oct 22, 2019
Season 1: Episode 7
Besides being known for his play The Importance of Being Earnest, as well as his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, Wilde also wrote a number of short stories. “The Happy Prince” is probably the most famous one. It was first published in 1888 in a collection called The Happy Prince and other stories, and that’s the one we’re reading today. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Forget by Eddie Newton
Tuesday Oct 15, 2019
Tuesday Oct 15, 2019
Season 1: Episode 6
Eddie Newton has had several short stories published and has won the Robert L. Fish Memorial award for Best First Mystery Short Story. He has a political thriller available on Amazon called American Herstory, and his forthcoming novel Horrorfrost is being published this winter and will also be available both digitally and in print on Amazon. He and myself both contributed stories to an apocalyptic anthology published in 2018 called Enter the Aftermath. It’s a collection of end-of-the-world stories, as you may have guessed. And normally, we’re used to massive destruction with scorched skies and blackened seas and land laid waste. But Eddie Newton’s story has such a unique take on an apocalyptic scenario that I had to share it on the show.
